TOM HANKS is devastated by news that his first wife is terminally ill with bone cancer.

The 44-year-old star had arranged for SUSAN DILLINGHAM, 48, to be seen in California by the world's leading cancer specialists - but was told all they could do was manage her pain in her final months.

A friend reveals, "Tom was devastated by the news. He and Susan separated a long time ago, they've had their ups and downs like any divorced couple, but they still talk to each other regularly because of their two children."
