America And Japan Dominate Cannes


The CANNES FILM FESTIVAL next month (MAY01) in France looks set to be the most American-friendly ever.

Five of the 23 films in competition are from Hollywood, and tributes to MARTIN SCORSESE and MELANIE GRIFFITH will be shown.

Asian movies still rule at the festival, with entries from Taiwan, India, China and Iran. Japan dominates the event, with seven films in the various sections, including three in competition.

Highlights in include SEAN PENN's PLEDGE, The (2001) NICOLE KIDMAN's MOULIN ROUGE (2001), animated feature SHREK (2001), Russia's TAURUS (2001) and Japan's acclaimed DESERT MOON (2001). This year's Cannes jury will include actresses LIV ULLMANN, CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG, JULIA ORMOND and SANDRINE KIBERLAIN. (KL/HR/ES)
