Nephew of Oscar winning director Jonathan Demme, responsible for Silence of the Lambs, The (1991), has died aged 38 on Sunday afternoon after playing basketball.

Ted Demme directed last year's drug smuggling hit film Blow (2001) and Beautiful Girls (1996).

The cause of death is not yet known, although it is most likely that he suffered a heart attack. The Los Angeles Coroner's office will be conducting an autopsy.

Demme leaves behind wife Amanda Scheer-Demme, a four year old daughter and a two month old son.
