Three British directors are in the running for the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
The last Brit winner of the Palme d'Or was six years ago when Mike Leigh won for directing Secrets and Lies (1996).
The three hopefuls are; Ken Loach with Sweet Sixteen (2002), Mike Leigh with All or Nothing (2002) and Michael Winterbottom with his recent film 24 Hour Party People (2001), documenting the life of Tony Wilson, the man behind the rise of the Manchester music scene.
This years festival is going to have a special preview of Martin Scorsese's next film, Gangs Of New York (2001), expected to be his best work since Casino (1995), featuring big names such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day Lewis and Cameron Diaz.
