Mel Gibson says he considered suicide

Mel Gibson said he once considered committing suicide by jumping out of a window.

He tells a US television show that he hit an all-time low after becoming an alcoholic in the early 1990s.

The 57-year-old star told the Primetime show: "I just didn't want to go on. I was looking down and thinking, 'Man, this is just easier this way.'

"
You have to be mad, you have to be insane, to despair in that way," said the Lethal Weapon star.

But he says he fought back and turned to God: "
I think I just hit my knees. I just said 'Help.' Pain is the precursor to change, which is great. That's the good news."

The Sun says he also defended his latest film, The Passion of The Christ, which he directed.
