Spielberg and Cruise for War of the Worlds

Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise are working on a movie of H G Wells' The War Of The Worlds.

Cruise would star in the film and Spielberg hopes to start work on directing the sci-fi classic next year.

The director is currently finishing The Terminal, starring Tom Hanks. Plans for a fourth Indiana Jones movie have stalled, according to Variety.

It will be the second cinematic attempt to adapt Wells's tale of Martians invading Victorian Britain.

The book was filmed in 1953 by Byron Haskin, with the action shifted to small-town America.

But the most famous version is still Orson Welles's 1938 radio broadcast, which caused a national panic in the US.
