Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst have signed up for Spider-Man 3 - before Spider-Man 2 has even been released.
Sam Raimi will again direct for Sony and the film has been scheduled for a May 2007 release, reports Variety.
Meanwhile, Sony has brought forward the release of Spider-Man 2 by two days to June 30 in the US to take full advantage of the Independence Day holiday weekend.
Sony is said to be "very excited" about the potential of Spider-Man 2 to do even better than the first film which remains the US record holder for the biggest box office debut over a three-day weekend.
Producer Laura Ziskin said: "We set out to make a movie that had the excitement, humour and the humanity of the first movie - times two."
