Kate Beckinsale is to star in a thriller set in Antarctica.

She will play a US marshal in Whiteout, based on an award-winning graphic novel by Greg Rucka.

Beckinsale is sent to Antarctica to investigate the continent's first murder, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

She has only three days to solve the crime before Antarctica is plunged into winter and she is stranded with the killer.

Filming is due to start in Montreal in March.
