Lohan begins house arrest sentence

Lindsay Lohan has been fitted with an ankle monitor and is serving her sentence on house arrest rather than going to jail.

A sheriff's official said the 24-year-old starlet started serving her term on Thursday after turning herself in at a jail facility in the US just after 5 am.

The Mean Girls actress was sentenced in April to 120 days in jail for violating her probation in a 2007 drunken driving case by taking a necklace from a jewellery shop without permission.

Lindsay applied to serve house arrest, but the accommodation hadn't been finalised when she appeared in court earlier this month and pleaded no contest to misdemeanour grand theft.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman said Lindsay is expected to serve about 35 days of her sentence.

He said the actress was cooperative when she turned herself in, and it took about an hour for her to be fingerprinted and booked. No new mugshot was taken.

Lindsay has been cast to appear as the wife of John Gotti Junior in a biopic of the infamous New York mob family. Shooting is scheduled to begin later this year.

Steve Honig, a spokesman for the film, Gotti: Three Generations, has refused to make a comment.
