Great Gatsby To Open Cannes Film Festival.

The Great Gatsby will open this year's Cannes Film Festival, organisers have confirmed.

Leonardo DiCaprio plays the lead role in the adaptation of the classic novel, which is being directed by Australian film-maker Baz Luhrmann.

Opening the world's most famous film festival is seen as a privilege and gives a film a useful publicity boost.

Luhrmann said it was a "great honour" and said Cannes was a special place for him.

"We are thrilled to return to a country, place and festival that has always been so close to our hearts," he said.

"Not only because my first film Strictly Ballroom was screened there 21 years ago, but also because F Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside Saint-Raphaël."

The screening, on May 15, will take place in 3D, with the film's stars turning out for the red carpet event.

British actress Carey Mulligan plays a key character in the movie, Daisy Buchanan, as does former Spider-Man actor Tobey Maguire, who plays narrator Nick Carraway.

The opening gala will be preceded by a glitzy fashion parade and followed by a series of parties in the French resort.

Rapper Jay-Z, who has been working on the soundtrack for the film, will also be at the event.
