Tom Hanks and Ron Howard to make Dan Brown's Inferno.

Tom Hanks and director Ron Howard are to enter the murky world of Dan Brown's Robert Langdon once again, it's been confirmed.

But rather than take on his third book 'The Lost Symbol', Sony is to skip ahead to 'Inferno'.

Production on 'The Lost Symbol' was said to have stalled, and now the latest film will pick up on the momentum of Brown's latest book instead.

Screenwriter David Koepp, who adapted 'Angels & Demons' - which followed the first big screen outing of Brown's breakthrough novel 'The Da Vinci Code' - will return to pen 'Inferno'.

Sony even has a release date slated – December 18, 2015.

The book follows another conspiratorial conundrum for fictional Harvard symbologist professor Robert Langdon, played by Hanks.

Set in Italy, the subject of the film is a riddle held within Dante's classic text 'Inferno', the first part of his 'Divine Comedy'.

Brown's book was released in May this year, and became an instant best-seller.
