Northam was born in Cambridge, where his mother and father were both university professors (his father being well known for his translations of Henrik Ibsen), before moving to Bristol and thence to London University where he studied English literature. His theatre training was at the Old Vic Theatre School and he then worked his way through regional theatre to the London stage.
For his work in 1999 Northam has recently been awarded the London Critics Circle Award for British Actor of the Year.
