Biography

Tom Hanks1999 saw Hanks receive the Golden Globe Award and his fourth Academy Award nomination for his role as ‘Captain Miller’ in Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan. He became the first actor in over 50 years to win back-to-back Best Actor Academy Awards when he took home his second Oscar for his unforgettable performance in the title role of Robert Zemeckis’ Forrest Gump. His work in the film also brought him a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild AwardÒ. The year before, he had been honored with his first Academy Award, as well as a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor, for his moving portrayal of AIDS-stricken lawyer Andrew Beckett in Jonathan Demme’s Philadelphia.

He had previously won a Golden Globe Award and earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a little boy in a man’s body in Penny Marshall’s Big. He garnered another Golden Globe nomination for his work opposite Meg Ryan in the romantic comedy hit Sleepless in Seattle, directed by Nora Ephron. Most recently, the trio was reunited for the romantic comedy You’ve Got Mail.

Hanks received widespread critical and audience acclaim for his work in Apollo 13, in which he starred as astronaut Jim Lovell. His passion for the space program was most recently showcased in the Emmy-winning and critically-acclaimed HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon, which chronicles the story of America’s Apollo missions. Hanks executive produced and hosted the series, in addition to directing one segment, writing or co-writing several others, and acting in an episode as well. His dedication to reminding the world of the heroic efforts of World War II veterans continues through the Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg executive produced HBO production of the Stephen Ambrose book Band of Brothers.

In 1996, Hanks made his successful feature film writing and directing debut with That Thing You Do, in which he also starred. The title song spawned a hit single and also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
