Gladiator (2000) star Russell Crowe been voted Americans' all-time favourite Best Actor Oscar winner.
The poll, carried out by American magazine Biography, was
voted on by almost 4,000 readers.
In second place was Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs, The (1991)), followed by Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump (1994) and Philadelphia (1993)), John Wayne (True Grit) and James Stewart (Philadelphia Story, The (1998)).
Kevin Spacey (American Beauty (1999)) came sixth with Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman (1992)) in seventh, followed by Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas (1995)), Robert De Niro (Godfather Part II, The (1974) and Raging Bull (1980))
and Paul Newman (Color of Money, The (1986)).
Denzel Washington, who won this year's award for Training Day (2001), failed to make it into the top 10.
